Heritage Homestead Garden – Smeaton
Previously known by locals as “the spooky house in a paddock”, this rural Smeaton property has been thoughtfully transformed into a welcoming homestead garden designed to complement the character of the restored home and surrounding landscape.

Romany Lambert Garden Design carefully planned the space to create structure, softness, and seasonal colour around the house, while still responding to the practical realities of the Central Highlands climate. Where there was once little more than overgrown grass and weeds, the garden now features layered perennial planting, gravel pathways, and low-maintenance landscaping that feels connected to both the home and the wider rural setting.
A key focus of the project was ensuring the garden could be enjoyed from inside the house as much as from outdoors. Planting was positioned to frame views from the verandah and windows, providing soft colour, texture, and flowers to pick throughout the seasons while maintaining the open feel of the surrounding paddocks.

Given the exposed conditions in Smeaton, the planting palette was selected with frost tolerance, drought resistance, and fire-conscious landscaping principles in mind. The result is a resilient country garden that feels established, welcoming and suited to long-term rural living.
The transformation has completely changed the feel of the property, turning a once-neglected paddock setting into a garden that feels connected, lived-in, and firmly part of the landscape.
